LOVE AND THE LAW: Will the U.S. Supreme Court Do the Right Thing on Marriage Equality?

03/18/2013 - 7:00pm
JusticePic

On March 26 and 27, the United States Supreme Court will hear cases challenging California’s Proposition 8 and the federal Defense of Marriage Act, which ban legal recognition of same-sex couples’ marriages. Will they uphold the lower-court rulings that have declared marriage equality a civil right? Will they reverse them and say the definition of marriage should be led to each state? Or will they look for a procedural “out” that will allow them to rule narrowly in these cases without establishing any sweeping precedents?

SAME and Activist San Diego(ASD) invite the community for a forum at the Joyce Beers Center at 3900 Vermont St, San Diego, CA. 92103. Mon, 03/18/13 at 7:00pm

Hear prominent local attorneys and activists discuss the legal issues surrounding marriage equality and what the Supreme Court is likely to do.

Rebel Church of England clergy will bless gay marriages carried out in other churches if Anglicans are exempted from a new law on same-sex marriage, some 150 vicars and campaigners said in a letter published on Sunday.

Anglicans including ex-Bishop of Oxford Richard Harries and dozens of clergy wrote to the Sunday Telegraph saying they would advise gay parishioners to marry in Quaker or Unitarian services, then return to their regular church.

As you recall, following Judge Walker's ruling of Prop 8 unconstitutional, the Equality 9 were arrested for engaging in a peaceful sit-in when the San Diego County Clerk would not issue Marriage Licenses to two same-sex couples who had appointments that day.

Equality 9 News! Judge slams prosecutors for dismissing gay juror!

By Dana Littlefield and Matthew T. Hall,

— A judge ruled Tuesday that prosecutors in a case involving a group of same-sex marriage activists violated the defendants' rights by dismissing a potential juror based on his sexual orientation.

Superior Court Judge Joan Weber ruled that the defendants in the case were denied a representative jury when prosecutors challenged the selection of a gay man to be on the panel. She said she found the actions of the San Diego City Attorney’s Office “shocking.”

The judge dismissed the entire jury panel.
