Join us to commemorate the 39th anniversary of the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision which established the right of women to a safe and legal abortion at Occupy San Diego's Freedom Square (3rd Ave & B St, Downtown San Diego) Sunday Jan 22, 2012, from 1pm-3pm.
Unfortunately, since the histori.c Roe ruling, access to abortion has been steadily chipped away by the congress and state legislatures who cut funding and create restrictions for young women or certain procedures.
Legislation in several US states threatens to close clinics by forcing them to comply with onerous and ridiculous building codes. If you thought that with a Democrat in the White House the attacks would stop, think again. In December, Secretary of Health and Human Services, Kathleen Sebelius overruled the Food and Drug Administration and declared that teenage girls would need to get a prescription for "Plan B" birth control, even though it was found to be safer than Tylenol.
We need a movement today to defend reproductive rights that's as big and bold as the movements that won them in the first place. It should be possible: the past three years of recession have been especially hard on women in a million different ways. But we don't have anything if we lack control over our own bodies--free, easy access to abortion and contraception is an essential demand for women's liberation, and should be a demand of the 99%!
