Over the past year, Labor and the local LGBT community have come together in support of each other for several causes.
Labor and the LGBT community share many common issues, including the boycott of the Manchester Grand Hyatt and efforts to pass the Employment Non-Discrimination Act.
One LGBT organization in particular, the San Diego Alliance for Marriage Equality (SAME), has stood in solidarity with hotel workers in boycotts of the Manchester Grand Hyatt and Old Town restaurants Barra Barra and Fiesta de Reyes.
“We cannot effectively fight for justice and equality for ourselves while remaining silent when our brothers and sisters similarly face injustice,” SAME said in a statement of support for Old Town workers. “Rather, we must build a movement that supports justice and equality for everyone.”
The organization has become a fixture at UNITE HERE Local 30 events in recent months, as SAME members have made delegation visits to elected officials, helped the union with outreach, and walked picket lines in Old Town, the Manchester Grand Hyatt and Handlery Hotel.
There are currently no events scheduled. Check back soon!
SAME meets on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month at the residential building on the southeast corner of 4th and Walnut in San Diego. Email info@samealliance.com for details.
